FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
What Size Power Hammer Do I Need?
The right hammer depends on the type of work you plan to undertake.
Smaller hammers, such as our 15kg (33lb) models, are ideal for knifemakers, hobby blacksmiths, and workshops with limited space. Mid-sized hammers, such as the 25kg and 40kg models, are often the most versatile choice for professional blacksmiths and general forging applications. Larger hammers are better suited to production work, heavy forging, and larger stock sizes.
There is an old saying in the blacksmithing world: buy the biggest Power Hammer you can afford. In many cases, this is sound advice. Most blacksmiths quickly discover that as their skills, projects, and confidence grow, so does their appetite for larger stock sizes and more demanding work. It is rare to hear someone say they wish they had bought a smaller hammer.
That said, the largest machine is not always the right choice. Available space, power supply, budget, and the type of work you intend to carry out should all be considered when selecting a hammer.
If you're unsure which model is best for your application, please contact us and we'll be happy to discuss your requirements and recommend the most suitable machine.
Can I run a Power Hammer on single-phase power?
Our smaller Power Hammers are available in single-phase configurations. Larger machines typically require a three-phase power supply, although phase converters or variable frequency drives (VFDs) can often be used where three-phase power is unavailable.
If you tell us your available power supply, we can advise on the most suitable options.
Do I need an air compressor?
All the Power Hammers currently supplied by PowerHammers are self-contained pneumatic hammers and do not require an external air compressor.
What material size can a Power Hammer forge?
The maximum stock size depends on both the hammer model and the material being forged.
Larger hammers can move larger sections of material more efficiently.
If you have a specific material size or application in mind, please contact us for guidance.
Do You Ship Internationally?
Yes.
We supply customers throughout the United States and regularly export Power Hammers to customers around the world, including the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
Whether you're located in the USA or overseas, we can arrange sea freight, air freight, customs documentation, and delivery to your workshop where required.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery times vary depending on the machine, destination, and stock availability.
Some machines may be available from stock, while others are built to order. We will always provide an estimated delivery time before an order is placed.
If your project is time-sensitive, please let us know and we will discuss the fastest available options.
Will my hammer arrive assembled?
Most machines arrive largely assembled and ready for installation.
Some components may need to be fitted after delivery, depending on the machine and shipping method. Full installation guidance is provided, and support is available if required.
Do I Need a Forklift to Unload the Machine?
A forklift is often recommended for unloading and positioning your Power Hammer. However, if you do not have access to one, please let us know and we will work with you to find a suitable solution.
Power Hammers are heavy industrial machines and require appropriate lifting equipment to unload and move safely. Depending on the machine and delivery location, alternatives such as pallet trucks, engine cranes, telehandlers, local lifting contractors, or tail-lift delivery vehicles may be available.
If you have any concerns about access, unloading, or installation, please contact us before ordering and we will be happy to discuss the options available.
Do I need a special foundation?
For the majority of our hammers, a ‘special foundation’ is not necessary.
Every workshop is different, but most Power Hammers perform best when installed on a suitable concrete foundation.
Foundation requirements vary depending on the hammer size, workshop construction, and intended use.
We can provide guidance on installation and foundation recommendations for your specific machine. You can find more info in our installation article.
